How to Create Unique Long-Lasting Centerpieces at Home | Pottery Barn

Whether it is a weekend family get-together, a date for two or an extravagant Thanksgiving dinner, centerpiece decorations can help you stand out as an exceptionally creative host. But how does one go about decorating table for every occasion? Pottery Barn’s expert and floral designer Nico de Swert has come up with simplified solutions to help you create a simple and striking table centerpiece by yourself. In this video, he explains how simple objects can be used to prepare stunning and long lasting centerpieces. Nico uses a Pottery Barn bowl and three ingredients – fresh lemon leaves, fresh lemons and fresh Satsuma mandarins. He places the lemon leaves in the bowl along the edges to create a base. Next, Nico takes lemons and bunches them by tying together the stems. These are placed with the leafy layer along the edges as well to which the mandarins are added in the space in between; thus creating an elegant table centerpiece; perfect for weekend brunches. For the second arrangement Nico takes – three lanterns from Pottery Barn, a few river stones and some clump moss (you can even use Spanish moss). The three lanterns are placed next to each other with the clump moss around it. And the river stones are placed on the moss in a pleasingly random fashion. The most noteworthy thing here is that all these ingredients can be bought from the local fruit store or gardener. You may choose any local or seasonal fruits, leaves and other accessories to develop your own long lasting

Popular bulbs for the home gardener

Popular bulbs for the home gardener

Article by Tony Robinson

Gardening with bulbs has many advantages for the gardener. For one thing, most bulb plants are inexpensive, and bulbs are durable out of the ground and hardy in the ground. Shopping for the right bulbs is also easy; simply choosing firm, healthy looking bulbs, and avoiding those that are cracked, dry or soft is a good way to choose the best bulbs for your garden.

There are so many types of bulbs, however, that it can be difficult to find the right ones for your garden. This article presents a brief overview of some of the most popular flower bulbs.GladiolusGladiolas are among the most popular of all bulb plants, and their distinctive sword shaped leaves and funnel shaped flowers are instantly recognizable to gardeners and non gardeners alike. This striking appearance has made gladiolas a favorite bulb with many gardeners, and they make a fine centerpiece to any garden due to their large size and attractive appearance. The large summer flowering gladiolas can range in height from three feet to a huge six feet, and their variety of colors makes them great for any garden.

Gladiolas are best planted in the spring, but only after the soil has warmed. Gladiolas typically bloom between 65 and 100 days after planting. Many gardeners plant new gladiola bulbs at one or two week intervals over a four to six week period in order to enjoy continuous blooms. Each gladiola bulb should be planted four times as deep as the bulb is wide, for instance a one inch wide bulb would be planted four inches deep. The spacing of gladiolas should be between four to six inches.

Gladiolas do best in full sunlight and they should be watered regularly during their blooming and growth phase. In much of the country, gladiola bulbs can be left in the ground over the winter months, but many gardeners choose to dig them up and store them during the winter. If you decide to take this approach, it is best to dig them after the leaves have turned yellow. The bulbs should be placed in a single layer and stored in a cool, dry and dark place to dry for two or three weeks. After the bulbs have dried sufficiently they should be stored in nylon stockings or onion sacks and kept in a cool and well ventilated place.

HemerocallisHemerocallis is the scientific name for the daylily, and it is one of the most well known types of bulb plants on the market. Gardeners love the hardy and trouble free nature of the daylily, and their arching and sword shaped leaves provide a striking addition to any garden. Daylily hybrids can grow as tall as six feet and bloom in the spring and summer months. The daylily produces flowers ranging in size from three to eight inches, and they are available in a wide variety of colors. The daylily gets its name from the fact that each of its flowers lasts only a single day, but its buds open on successive days, and this enhances the beauty of the plant.

The daylily is actually a tuberous root variety of bulb, and they are best planted during fall or early spring. Daylilies should be planted between ? inch and 1 inch deep and space between 2 to 2½ inches apart in the garden. As with other varieties of bulbs, it is important to water daylilies on a regular basis during their growing season.

Goliath (Big Box Stores) get slammed David (Independent Garden Stores)-Secret Told at Upcoming Show

Goliath (Big Box Stores) get slammed David (Independent Garden Stores)-Secret Told at Upcoming Show

Article by MJ Gilhooley

Between Sunday circulars, Web sites and e-newsletters, Home Depot and Lowe’s are now realizing they need to be on an all-out offensive for consumers on the outdoor living front, while offering incentives such as a 0,000 Backyard Retreat Giveaways. Unfortunately, according to those managing a critical industry exodus of Independent Garden Centers from across the US (August 21-23, Navy Pier, Chicago), the Big Boxes simply can’t deliver the popular DIY (do it yourself) new breed of instant gratification garden supplies that garden centers specialize in.

Those who spend hours and hours growing long stemmed roses or slow-growing bulbs have taken second place to the booming market for immediate-impact categories like bedding plants and pre-planted container gardens. Only independent garden centers have spent years specializing in putting together and taking superior care of brilliant bedding plants and “instant gardens.”

Seeing the significant need for this national event, the Garden Centers of America (GCA), the Home and Garden Showcase and the Lawn and Gardening Marketing Distribution Association have all quickly endorsed Show. 500 vendor booths have been sold-out by “modern merchants who are offering supplies 100% relevant to this prime trend,” says Jeff Morey, publisher of Nursery Retailer and Garden Chic magazine and producer of the event. They have plans to expand the annual event as demand grows.

Keynoters include Susie Coelho, star of HGTV’s Outer Spaces; trend experts Robyn Waters and Leatrice Eisman; Charles Fishman, author of The Wal-Mart Effect and a panel of prominent GC retailers. More than 20 other sessions, workshops and tours round out the program.

“This is a show that our industry has needed for a long time. We’ll be there,” said Ed Malek, President and CEO of Stein Gardens and Gifts. Many retailers have expressed similar sentiment and particularly like that The IGC Show is 100% focused on their specific needs.

The Independent Garden Center Show (IGCS) us the first and only US Trade event dedicated soley to the needs of of independent garden center owners, managers and buyers from across the country. To find out more go to
